Today’s man recognizes that good grooming is essential for looking and feeling fantastic. Here are some top tips to keep the modern man looking his best-from top to toe…
Pamper and Protect Your Skin
Men should be as concerned with their skin’s condition as their female counterparts. A good daily skin care routine will not only help to keep wrinkles at bay but also protect your face against sun spots and skin cancer. There are a wide range of skin care products at Link Pharmacies countrywide, specifically formulated for men and the most popular of these include the Nivea for Men and L’Oreal Men product ranges.
Identify your skin type before choosing skincare products – if you have oily skin, choose oil-free products and choose a sensitive product for easily-irritated skin.
A quality moisturizer with an SPF of 15+ after your morning cleanse will help protect your face against sun damage, wrinkles and skin cancer.
Using a moisturizer with alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) at night will also help to repair and regenerate facial skin. AHA penetrates the dead surface cells of the skin, loosening the molecular bonds that attach them to the underlying tissues. These loose cells then slough off, exposing new skin. Furthermore, a specialist eye cream will help you combat wrinkles around the eyes and counter any puffiness caused by stress or lack of sleep.
There are a number of body moisturizers on the market that have a fresh, masculine scent and nourishing ingredients to keep you smelling great and your skin soft and protected.
Most importantly, remember that eating a balanced diet, avoiding late nights, cigarettes and alcohol and drinking plenty of water will always ensure a healthy body and youthful complexion.
Keep It Clean
Even the best dressed man can become less appealing if hygiene is not his number one priority. Showering daily with a quality soap or body wash and using a good antiperspirant before dressing will help prevent the build-up of odour-producing bacteria and keep you feeling fresh and confident. Trusted brands like Sanex manufacture a great range of deodorants and bodywashs available at most Link pharmacies.
Ensure a sparkling smile and fresh breath by brushing your teeth thoroughly every morning and evening before bed. There are a number of great whitening toothpastes on the market which can target stains caused by smoking, drinking and eating certain foods. Gargling with a good mouthwash will also help beat bad breath and chewing sugar-free gum after meals will guarantee a fresh mouth. Caring for your nails with the use of a nail brush and emery board to remove dirt and rough cuticle edges is essential – especially after performing any manual labour.
Gents should also take the time to remove any visible ear or nose hair and make sure that the hair on their head is kept healthy and shiny with a conditioning shampoo. Use a good antidandruff shampoo for a flaky scalp and style your hair neatly and in keeping with your face shape, age and lifestyle. Also, avoid loading hair with too much spray or gel as this can appear over-styled instead of the sexy ‘touchable’ look that’s way more appealing. Lastly, use a spritz or splash of cologne moderately. A man that smells like he has been marinading in aftershave is never attractive!
Feel Good
Whether we like or not, people tend to make a judgment on the way we present ourselves to the world. Personal grooming can not only improve the image men project but also boost their confidence tremendously. So, take the time to care for yourself everyday and enjoy the self-assurance that comes with knowing that you look and feel your best.

Smooth Shave
Bushy beards, uneven stubble, razor cuts, red bumps and unattractive in-grown hairs do not make for a polished appearance! Taming unruly facial hair is the key to a well groomed look. If you decide against the clean shaven look, keep in mind that beards and moustaches should always be neatly trimmed. Trim your beard only when it’s dry and use a moustache comb and the upper lip as a guide when trimming a moustache. If you have a longer beard, care for it as you would the hair on your head by shampooing, conditioning and combing it regularly.
If a smooth face is more your style then you can shave off facial hair in one of two ways – either by performing a ‘wet shave’ by using a manual razor or by performing a ‘dry shave’ using an electric razor. Electric razors work especially well on coarse hair but modern manual razors also offer a smooth shave for all facial hair types, when used correctly. One of the key factors in getting a good manual shave is softening the facial hair prior to shaving. Shave after a shower because the heat and moisture will combine to soften the facial hair, making it easier to cut. Avoid using a disposable razor and spend money on a good quality triple-blade razor and moisturizing shaving cream. Always shave in the direction of hair growth as shaving against the direction of growth can lead to ingrown hairs and cause great discomfort. The facial hair grows in different directions in different areas of the face and neck, so be prepared to stop and change directions often.
Follow up your shave with your choice of aftershave balm or moisturizer to soothe and soften the skin. Remember to thoroughly clean and dry your razor blades and then completely immerse the razor head in a shallow dish filled with mineral oil. Use rubbing alcohol to wash away the oil next time you need to use the razor. By immersing the blades in oil, you stop the oxidization process that dulls their sharp edges and this can double or even triple the life of your cartridges.
Top Grooming Tips
CLEANSE
Use a gentle facial cleanser every morning and evening and invest in a good facial scrub to deep cleanse your pores. Use two to three times a week.
MOISTURISE
Choose a daily moisturiser with an SPF 15+, and for night time, use a moisturiser with alpha hydroxy acid (AHA).
SKINCARE
It is important to correctly identify your skin’s type and only use products specifically formulated for you. For example, if you have oily skin, invest in oil–free products and if your skin is easily irritated, buy a sensitive skincare range.
BRUSH, FLOSS, RINSE
Ensure a sparkling smile by brushing teeth morning and evening. Floss regularly and use a mouthwash to beat bad breath.
WASH, CONDITION
Choose a shampoo and conditioner appropriate to your hair type and wash your hair regularly to keep it shiny and clean. An anti-dandruff shampoo will help you avoid collar ‘snow’.
