Editor’s Tips for a Healthier Life

The Runs?

There is nothing more ominous than the sudden cramping of your stomach which has you doubled over and seeking sanctuary on the toilet.

If you’ve got diarrhoea, drink some black tea with sugar. Tea will rehydrate the body and contains astringent tannins that help to reduce inflammation in your intestines and block the absorption of toxins. The sugar improves sodium and water absorption.

Natural Nourishment

Exposure to chlorine and wind and sun can leave you skin feeling parched.

Head to your fridge – mash a ripe avocado and pat it onto your face as a moisturising mask. The oils act as an emollient and the avo also contains beneficial vitamin E.

Dry Mouth

There are lots of causes of a dry mouth: medications, chemotherapy, or even age. As saliva protects us from oral infections and tooth decay, having a dry mouth can lead to bad breath, mouth sores, cavities and bacterial infections of the mouth.

Chew some sugar-free gum (preferably with xylitol which can help to reduce cavity-forming bacteria), or suck on a sugarfree boiled sweet. They will stimulate the flow of saliva.

Morning Sickness

You’re delighted that you’re pregnant, but your stomach doesn’t seem to agree with you any longer?

Try a flat ginger ale to settle your stomach, and keep some Marie biscuits or plain crackers next to your bed to nibble on before you lift your head from your pillow in the morning. Having something in your stomach seems to ease the nausea.
